33 Day Consecration to St. Joseph
The Consecration to St. Joseph is a 33-day spiritual devotion that invites individuals to entrust themselves to the care and guidance of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. Rooted in love, prayer, and a desire for holiness, it draws on the rich tradition of Marian consecration and includes daily prayers, meditations on his titles, and acts of fasting and charity. This consecration deepens one’s relationship with St. Joseph, seeking his intercession and example in growing closer to God. While self-contained, it can be enriched by related readings like Fr. Calloway’s Consecration to St. Joseph.
How to Make the Consecration
- Recite the daily prayers which include the Litany of St. Joseph, a prayer to St. Joseph from the tradition, and a daily act of consecration;
- Receive the Sacrament of Confession each week, so that both the soul is cleansed and able to receive the graces most fully and also as a very practical way of asking St. Joseph to show us the areas in our life that we need his help most and where we can better follow his example;
- Make a noteworthy act of charity each week which could be a contribution to the Church or a quality charitable organization, to an individual in need, it could be time spent volunteering, making a meal for someone calling and speaking to someone isolated or with whom you haven’t spoken for a long period of time;
- Abstain from meat on Wednesdays (in addition to the ordinarily prescribed days of abstinence or fast).
Consecration Outline
Day 1
CONSECRATION TO ONE GOD IN LOVE
In beginning our Consecration to St. Joseph, we give our attention first to this very act that we are undertaking, which is to Consecrate ourselves to One God in Love. Spurred on by our love for God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we turn toward this beloved Saint as friends and spiritual children, that he will persevere, intercede and lead us to his adopted son.
From among all men, it was St. Joseph who was chosen to be the Foster Father of His Son, the Spouse of the Mother of God and the Protector of her virginity. He was also called forth to care for them, to feed, nurture, provide a place for them to rest their heads and tend to all of their needs. It is not much for us to then take a small step, remembering Mary as both the Mother and Image of the Church, and see in St. Joseph, one who desires to do these very same things for us. He is the one among us who said an unequivocal “Yes” when asked to participate in God’s work and salvation in a most holy and intense way.
To Consecrate ourselves to St. Joseph is first and foremost, not a consecration to man, but to our One God in Love. It is not an act of worship to this beloved Saint, but an act of devotion, invitation and request that through him we may join in this same salvific work. To say it in another way: Out of His Love, God chose St. Joseph as a way for us to participate joyfully in the life of His Son and the Salvation of others.
We may also be reminded of the plea and testimony of St. Teresa of Jesus, who testifies: “I cannot call to mind that I have ever asked him at any time for anything which he has not granted; and I am filled with amazement when I consider the great favors which God has given me through this blessed Saint; the dangers from which he has delivered me, both of body and of soul.”
On this first day, it is also worthwhile to recall the Consecration that takes place at each celebration of the Holy Mass. It is not a coincidence or by mere happenstance that we use the same language in Consecrating ourselves. The Consecration is not the setting of the offering to God or request of God to accept our sacrifice. Rather, the Consecration is the time during the Eucharist in which ordinary bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ so that in this Mystery, we see that not only is the act of Consecration an act of lifting up to heaven in the Name of the One God, but through which such ordinary things truly become Christ. Consecration is an activity of substantial change and transformation into becoming more like the one to whom we are being Consecrated. Though in a less perfect way, our consecration to St. Joseph seeks to transform us to also become more like Christ.
Through St. Joseph, in this consecration, we turn toward this beloved and most chosen Saint, that we become his friends and spiritual children, and request that he will persevere, intercede and lead us to his adopted son.

TESTIMONY OF ST. TERESA
“I took for my patron and lord the glorious St. Joseph, and recommended myself earnestly to him. I saw clearly that both out of this my present trouble, and out of others great importance, relating to my honor and the loss of my soul, this my father and lord delivered me, and rendered me greater services than I knew how to ask for. I cannot call to mind that I have ever asked him at any time for anything which he has not granted; and I am filled with amazement when I consider the great favors which God has given me through this blessed Saint; the dangers from which he has delivered me, both of body and of soul.” –Autobiography, VI.9
ACT OF CONSECRATION
My beloved Joseph, Guardian of the Blessed Virgin Mary, chosen Protector of the Son of God, I ask of thee, standing before the heavenly hosts, all of the angels and Saints, the Seraphim and Cherubim who stand before the throne of our God, hear my plea of devotion and the desire of my heart to be drawn ever closer to the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus.
I turn to you as my Spiritual Father and place my life and my salvation into your most trustworthy and virtuous hands. Confident in your goodness, I place myself under the cloak of your paternal care and humbly ask that you protect me from the world, temptations of the flesh and assaults of the devil.
St. Joseph, virgin and most pure husband of the Mother of God, the beloved and most worthy spouse of Mary, help me to love her, my mother and Mother of the Church with perfect affection and unending devotion, that through her, in your generous care, I may remain also under her mantle of protection and drawn more perfectly to her son.
Never depart from me, St. Joseph. Nourish me with the Bread of Life, instruct me in the wisdom of the saints, help me to carry my cross, and keep me always in the Holy Catholic Church. When I die, take me to the Kingdom of Heaven to see Jesus and Mary.
From this day onward, I will never forget you. I will speak of you often, spend time with you in prayer and, with your help, earnestly strive to sin no more. Should I fall, help me to repent and go to Confession. Should I go astray, guide me back to the truth.
Before heaven and earth, my soul cries out: Praise to the Holy Trinity who has made you prince over all their possessions! Praise to the Virgin Mary who loves you and longs to see you loved! Praise to you, my spiritual father, the great St. Joseph.
Praise to the Holy Trinity who has blessed you and raised you to be the greatest saint after Mary. Praise to the Virgin who loves you and wants souls to love you. Praise to you, St. Joseph, my father, my guardian, and my all! Amen!
Day 2
IMAGE OF GOD THE FATHER
We step into Day 2 of our Consecration to St. Joseph keeping in mind the Image of God the Father.
In considering God the Father, there are two things that are very meaningful as we invite St. Joseph to be our spiritual father. The first is to remember the actual content of the Will of the Father, which is, as Jesus Christ told us: That none of what has been given to him be lost. The Will of the Father is that none of who has been given to our Good Shepherd be lost, but for our salvation and heavenly abode, ultimately, to live eternally in perfect union with the Holy Trinity. This too is St. Joseph’s desire for us. As we pray the Our Father today, we are invited to reflect on St. Joseph also in this role. Not because he is made to be God himself, but as he also sought, and with great virtue and success, to image himself and become like his Heavenly Father. St. Joseph is, in this way, also a father who is in heaven, his name is blessed (not hallowed), he seeks to bring our Father’s Kingdom on earth to dwell in our hearts, and his will is also for the salvation of each of his adopted sons and daughters. And we can imagine the remainder of the prayer in these very same ways as he prays and hopes also, being a model of forgiveness, that we receive our daily bread in Christ and be spared from all tests and temptations.
With this relationship of our Father and Joseph as an image of the Father in mind, we may also remember the relationship between God and His children of Israel. Beginning with their slavery in Egypt, He went down to Egypt to rescue them. He did not simply call them out and wait for them to come to Him. The Father actively comes to us, draws us out to meet Him, teaches us with commands and wisdom, perseveres through our youthfulness, endures in patience, and gives of his own life so that we come to know Him and become like Him.
The Father is the model for His son or daughter. As St. Joseph became like the Father, he leads us and also gives us the example of God the Father.

OUR FATHER X 5
Say 5 Our Fathers, with special attention and the intention of inviting St. Joseph as father of the Holy Family to be your spiritual father, and with confidence that he lives in imitation of our heavenly Father.
ACT OF CONSECRATION (St. Peter Julian Eymard)
I consecrate myself to you, good St. Joseph, as my spiritual father. I choose you to rule my soul and to teach me the interior life, the life hidden away with Jesus, Mary, and yourself.
Above all, I want to imitate the humble silence with which you shrouded Jesus and Mary. For me, everything rests in that—self abnegation like our Lord in his hidden life, making the world forget me by my silence and my practice of virtue.
I consecrate myself to you as my guide and model in all my duties so that I may learn to fulfill them with meekness and humility: with meekness toward my brethren. my neighbor, and all with whom I come in contact; with humility toward myself and simplicity before God.
I choose you, good Saint, as my counselor, my confidant, my protector in all my difficulties and trials. I do not ask to be spared crosses and sufferings, but only from self-love which might take away their value by making me vain about them.
I choose you as my protector. Be my father, as you were the father of the Holy Family at Nazareth. Be my guide; be my protector. I do not ask for temporal goods, greatness or power. I ask only that I serve with fidelity and devotedness my divine King.
I shall honor, love, and serve you with Mary, my mother, and never shall I separate her name from yours.
O Jesus, give me Joseph for a father as you have given me Mary as a mother. Fill me with devotion, confidence, and filial love. Listen to my prayer. I know that you will. Already I feel more devout, more full of hope and confidence in good St. Joseph, your foster father and my spiritual father.

Day 3
FATHER OF THE SON OF GOD
It is widely known in our tradition that everything the Church has come to know about the Blessed Virgin Mary comes from her relationship to Christ as the Mother of God. How often, on the other hand, do we think about St. Joseph in this same way? How often do we think about how profoundly he would have been changed and impacted by being the Father of the Son God?
To see the joy of the child Jesus, hear the words of Simeon in the temple, what wisdom Jesus shared with him; how unimaginable would it have been to hold the Son of God in your arms as he’s sleeping and to run to you for protection. All of these, and so much more, surely left a mark on St. Joseph’s soul.
He was both chosen to be the father of Jesus because of his virtue, faith and love, and was increased, being given the fullness of graces because he was his father. He possesses the wisdom, strength, compassion, patience, sense of justice and all virtues of faith that were fitting and necessary to raise the child Jesus and become a truly worthy father of the Son of God.

PRAYER TO THE CHILD JESUS (Ven. Cyril of the Mother of God)
O Child Jesus, I have recourse to You through Your Holy Mother, and Blessed St. Joseph, your father on earth; I implore You to assist me in this necessity, for I firmly believe that Your Divinity can assist me. I confidently hope to obtain Your holy grace. I love You with my whole heart and my whole soul. I am heartily sorry for my sins, and entreat You, O good Jesus, to give me strength to overcome them.I am firmly resolved never to offend You again and to suffer everything rather than displease You. Henceforth, I wish to serve You faithfully. For love of You, O divine Child, I will love my neighbor as myself. O Jesus, omnipotent Child, I entreat You again to come to my assistance in this necessity, as I consecrate myself to your foster father, St. Joseph. Grant me the grace of possessing You eternally with Mary and Joseph and of adoring You with Your Holy Angels and Saints.

(This prayer was given to the Venerable Cyril of the Mother of God when he underwent the work of restoring the Infant of Prague statue.)
ACT OF CONSECRATION (St. Bernardine of Siena)
O my beloved St. Joseph, adopt me as thy child. Take charge of my salvation; watch over me day and night; preserve me from the occasions of sin; obtain for me purity of body. Through thy intercession with Jesus, grant me a spirit of sacrifice, humility, self-denial, burning love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and a sweet and tender love for Mary, my mother, Saint Joseph, be with me living, be with me dying, and obtain for me a favorable judgment from Jesus, my merciful savior.

Day 4
TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Can there be any man who was more responsive and attentive to the Holy Spirit than St. Joseph? We remember that when the angel of the Lord appeared to St. Joseph in a dream to announce that it was by the Holy Spirit that his betrothed was with child, he did not hesitate to accept the words of the angel. And again, when the angel came to him and told him to take Mary and the child and flee from his homeland, to go to a foreign land, Egypt which was a sign and place of idolatry and enslavement, he did not call to mind what happened the last time that a Joseph, the son of Jacob, was cast into Egypt, but he immediately got up and followed the words of the angel. Even Moses, when he stood in front of the burning bush, contended with God and needed convincing.
St. Joseph did not contend, nor argue. We say that Joseph possessed a docility to the Holy Spirit, that he was in a condition of heart that was prepared and ready to respond to him. Such a responsiveness comes from a deep rooted relationship that was already present because he immediately recognized and heard the voice speaking through the angel. He was truly a Temple of the Holy Spirit.
As St. Pope John Paul II reminded us: Throughout the centuries, “those most sensitive to the impulses of divine love” saw in St. Joseph a soul most docile to the Holy Spirit and attuned to the interior life.
In today’s prayers, we are given the Novena to the Holy Spirit by Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Although carrying the title of a Novena, it is a single prayer.
Through her words, we experience the intimate revelation that the Holy Spirit desires to make in us, and to ponder: What soul cannot be but moved by such a Spirit dwelling within.
If you feel so moved, conclude with a Veni Creator (Come Holy Spirit). Like this beloved Saint, we pray also for the descent of this same Holy Spirit on all our brothers and sisters in Christ, and indeed on all of the world as we recognize and call to mind through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, You, our God, will renew the face of the earth.

NOVENA OF THE HOLY TRINITY (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross)
Who are you, sweet light, that fills me
And illumines the darkness of my heart?
You lead me like a mother’s hand,
And should you let go of me,
I would not know how to take another step.
You are the space
That embraces my being and buries it in yourself.
Away from you it sinks into the abyss
Of nothingness, from which you raised it to the light.
You, nearer to me than I to myself
And more interior than my most interior
And still impalpable and intangible
And beyond any name:
Holy Spirit eternal love!
Are you not the sweet manna
That from the Son’s heart
Overflows into my heart,
The food of angels and the blessed?
He who raised himself from death to life,
He has also awakened me to new life
From the sleep of death.
And he gives me new life from day to day,
And at some time his fullness is to stream through me,
Life of your life indeed, you yourself:
Holy Spirit eternal life!
Are you the ray
That flashes down from the eternal Judge’s throne
And breaks into the night of the soul
That had never known itself?
Mercifully relentlessly
It penetrates hidden folds.
Alarmed at seeing itself,
The self makes space for holy fear,
The beginning of that wisdom
That comes from on high
And anchors us firmly in the heights,
Your action,
That creates us anew:
Holy Spirit ray that penetrates everything!
Are you the spirit’s fullness and the power
By which the Lamb releases the seal
Of God’s eternal decree?
Driven by you
The messengers of judgment ride through the world
And separate with a sharp sword
The kingdom of light from the kingdom of night.
Then heaven becomes new and new the earth,
And all finds its proper place
Through your breath:
Holy Spirit victorious power!
Are you the master who builds the eternal cathedral,
Which towers from the earth through the heavens?
Animated by you, the columns are raised high
And stand immovably firm.
Marked with the eternal name of God,
They stretch up to the light,
Bearing the dome,
Which crowns the holy cathedral,
Your work that encircles the world:
Holy Spirit God’s molding hand!
Are you the one who created the unclouded mirror
Next to the Almighty’s throne,
Like a crystal sea,
In which Divinity lovingly looks at itself?
You bend over the fairest work of your creation,
And radiantly your own gaze
Is illumined in return.
And of all creatures the pure beauty
Is joined in one in the dear form
Of the Virgin, your immaculate bride:
Holy Spirit Creator of all!
Are you the sweet song of love
And of holy awe
That eternally resounds around the triune throne,
That weds in itself the clear chimes of each and every being?
The harmony,
That joins together the members to the Head,
In which each one
Finds the mysterious meaning of his being blessed
And joyously surges forth,
Freely dissolved in your surging:
Holy Spirit eternal jubilation!

ACT OF CONSECRATION
My Father and my Guardian, I give myself entirely to you, and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore, O good Father, since I am your own, keep me and guard me as your property and possession.

Day 5
BELOVED OF THE HOLY TRINITY
Throughout the past few days, we have focused on how St. Joseph embodies and serves as an image to us of the Holy Trinity as a Father, a Son and in the work of the Holy Spirit. He opens for us a doorway to seeing how we continue to live in the Image of God, as we were created. Today, we are invited to focus on how he was loved.
We are Beloved by the Holy Trinity. Each person of the Trinity loves perfectly, yet in a particular and distinct way. There is the love of a Father who protects, teaches and wills the salvation of all; the love of the Son who loves with obedience, companionship and reveals the Father; and the love of the Holy Spirit, who is the act of loving itself, reaching forth to the lost and giving of the Wisdom of the Father and Work of the Son.
Today, we introduce a Carmelite Memorare to St. Joseph, the recollection that he has never failed anyone who has sought his assistance and intercession. This is not according to his greatness, but that he is the Beloved of the Holy Trinity. The earliest tradition tells us that he was chosen from among the men of the village to be the spouse of the Mother of God and Father of the Son of God; As a son, he followed the rules, laws and wisdom of his Father, which was shown in his righteousness; In time of doubt and need for guidance, the Holy Spirit came to him through the angel to direct his every step. While these aspects draw our attention toward his actions and what Joseph did, today’s attention to the beloved pulls us back to one who receives the love of God.
He was beloved by the Father, as he was chosen to be the Foster Father of His Son; Beloved by the Son, who looked upon his father’s face as St. Joseph cradled him in his arms; and Beloved by the Holy Spirit, the Protector, as he became the protector of the Holy Family and was also beloved by Mary, the vessel of the Holy Spirit and Mother of God.
All that St. Joseph does for us is done in this very name of The Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit and thus all that he asks is done for him.

CARMELITE MEMORARE TO ST. JOSEPH
Remember, O most illustrious Patriarch St. Joseph, on the testimony of St. Teresa, thy devoted client, that never has it been heard that anyone invoked thy protection or sought thy mediation who has not obtained relief. O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to your honor and give myself to you, that you may always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a greater purity of heart and fervent love of the interior life. After your example, may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may shae in the peace and joy of your holy death.

Day 6
SPOUSE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD
Over these next several days, we are going to be meditating on the many titles of St. Joseph. While there are many aspects of his fatherhood and masculinity that are not only important, but always present, it is good to look at particular aspects and titles, not to limit him to certain things, but because they serve to highlight certain ways of relationship that we have with one another. By looking at these, we are drawn into a particular relationship with him, as he also draws and strengthens us in our relationships with others and in our own virtues. Yet even more, through these titles, we also receive a greater picture of the perfection of love.
While one of the more popular phrases of our time is that “Love is love,” we actually know that it is much deeper, more sacred, holier and much fuller than that. St. Joseph fleshes out for us many of these different dimensions and kinds of love when we focus on particular ways of being in relationship.
Today, we focus on St. Joseph as the Spouse of the Mother of God. What a privileged place that must be, to be the Spouse of the Blessed Mother; to be a protector, supporter, and in a relationship of mutual obedience; to sleep at her side every night, eat at the same table and discuss the care of their family day after day. He was the one to provide for all of her needs, that the one to whom we pray: “To thee do we sigh, mourning and weeping.” would turn to him. And again, God chose him to be her spouse out of confidence and surety that he would indeed respond and be able to provide for all of her needs, in body and in spirit.
We can also recall what has become difficult words for many from St. Paul, who calls wives to be obedient to their husbands. As the Spouse of the Mother of God, both the Mother of God and Son of God were under obedience to St. Joseph. It was not that God took a chance and hoped that this man would be upright, or that he gave Mary and Jesus the option of being obedient only when they agreed with him, but Joseph himself so responds to the Will of God and is such a righteous man, that God would place the Blessed Virgin under his obedience. This obedience finds fulfillment and holiness because it is a mutual obedience.
We also remember St. Paul’s words for husbands: To love her as Christ loves his church. Is it truly any cost to us to be obedient to Christ, knowing the love that he has for us, but that we would gladly accept his yoke, not as an instrument of burden, but in him the burden becomes light. As the Spouse to the Mother of God, Joseph gave to Mary the Love that Christ gave to the Church, and as Jesus sought not his will, but to do the Will of the Father, a husband, as revealed through St. Joseph, is likewise to seek the Will of the Father and not his own.

ST. JOSEPH AT FATIMA
“In October Our Lord will come, as well as Our Lady of Dolors and Our Lady of Carmel. St Joseph will appear with the Child Jesus to bless the world…” (Words of Our Lady, apparition of September 13, 1917)
“After Our Lady had disappeared into the immense distance of the firmament, we beheld St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and Our Lady robed in white with a blue mantle, beside the sun. St. Joseph and the Child Jesus appeared to bless the world, for they traced the Sign of the Cross with their hands. When, a little later, this apparition disappeared, I saw Our Lord and Our Lady; Our Lord appeared to bless the world in the same manner as St. Joseph had done. This apparition also vanished, and I saw Our Lady once more, this time resembling Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.” Lucia’s description of the vision of October 13, 1917)
ACT OF CONSECRATION (St. Alphonsus Liguori)
O Holy Patriarch, I rejoice with you at the exalted dignity by which you were deemed worthy to act as father to Jesus, to give him orders and to be obeyed by him whom heaven and earth obey.
O great saint, as you were served by God, I too wish to be taken into your service. I choose you, after Mary, to be my chief advocate and protector.
I promise to honor you every day by some special act of devotion and by placing myself under your daily protection.
By that sweet company which Jesus and Mary gave you in your lifetime, protect me all through life, so that I may never separate myself from my God by losing his grace.
My dear St. Joseph, pray to Jesus for me. Certainly, he can never refuse you anything, as he obeyed all your orders while on earth. Tell him to detach me from all creatures and from myself, to inflame me with his holy love, and then to do with me what he pleases.
By that assistance which Jesus and Mary gave you at death, I beg of you to protect me in a special way at the hour of my death, so that dying assisted by you, in the company of Jesus and Mary, I may go to thank you in paradise and, in your company, to praise my God for all eternity. –Amen.

Day 7
FATHER OF ALL THE FAITHFUL
Most of us are familiar with the account of Mary standing at the foot of the cross when Jesus looked at her and placed all of his followers into her care and she become the Mother of all the Faithful. It seems only reasonable that her worthy spouse, though no longer alive to stand at the cross, would receive the same inheritance.
Through Mary and being the Foster Father of the Son of God, St. Joseph is also Father to all the Faithful. He is the intercessor for all. By consecrating our sacrifices through him, we join in the fatherly sacrifices that he made. But more poignantly, like the father of the Prodigal Son, St. Joseph prays and hopes for those who have become lost or fallen; he prays and is present to those who have already lost their earthly father, especially at an early age, and he is most tenderly and strongly present for those children who suffer under oppressive or abusive fathers.
Pray to our Blessed St. Joseph, for those most in need of a Father.

A PROPHECY OF VEN. ISIDORE OF ISOLANIS
“the sound of victory will be hear in the Church Militant when the faithful recognize the sanctity of St. Joseph.” . . . “The Lord will let His light shine, He will lift the veil, and great men will search out the interior gifts of God that are hidden in St. Joseph; they will find in him a priceless treasure, the like of which they had never found in other saints of the Old Testament. We are inclined to believe that toward the end of time God will overwhelm St. Joseph with glorious honors. If in the past ages, during the storms of persecution, these honors could not be shown to St. Joseph, we must conclude that they have been reserved for later times. At some future time the feast of St. Joseph will be celebrated as one of the greatest feasts. The Vicar of Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit, will order this feast to be celebrated in the Universal Church.”
–The Ven. Isidore of Isolanis was a Dominican friar in the 16th century.
ACT OF CONSECRATION (St. Bernadine of Siena)

Day 8
NOBLE OFFSPRING OF DAVID
Today, we are reminded that St. Joseph did not happen to simply be at the right place at the right time. He is not a footnote as the spouse of Mary, but his betrothal to the Mother of God and role in raising the Son of God was an ordained part of God’s plan for Salvation from long before he was born.
St. Joseph was descended from David’s line in order that the promise God had made to King David would be fulfilled; that salvation would come from his line. St. Joseph was a man of destiny and a man of noble birth, virtue and faith. He is yet another sign of the fulfillment of God’s promises (for those moments when we struggle to maintain our own faith after long waiting).
As a Noble Offspring, however, he inspires us to ask from where his nobility comes. It is not simply that he was born from such a blessed line of kings, he is not simply the Offspring of David, but St. Joseph was noble by his virtue, by his righteousness and by his faith. These qualities are what makes one noble and brings us into the mission that Our Father has for us, and into the plan of salvation that He has for the world.
Today we also begin commemorating the 7 Sorrows of St. Joseph, focusing on one sorrow each day. This is an invitation to join him, not only in his promises and glory, but also to be with him in his sorrow, as a true friend is not only there for the good times and blessings, but is present in the difficult and sorrowful times as well. On this day, we pray with him in his sorrow of the doubt he felt at the announcement that Mary was with child, joining him and then giving to him also our moments of sorrow when it appears that our hopes for the future have been dashed. And yet, what joy he must have felt when the angel revealed the part of God’s plan that he had not seen. So it is through faith in the fulfillment of what God has promised, that he also can take away our sorrows in those moments of doubt.

THE FIRST SORROW OF ST. JOSEPH: THE DOUBT OF JOSEPH WHEN MARY WAS WITH CHILD (Mt 1:19)
O chaste Spouse of Mary most holy, glorious St. Joseph, great was the trouble and anguish of thy heart when you were minded to put away privately your inviolate spouse, yet thy joy was unspeakable when the surpassing mystery of the Incarnation was made known to thee by the Angel!
By this sorrow and this joy, we beseech thee to comfort our souls, both now and in the sorrows of our final hour, with the joy of a good life and a holy death after the pattern of thine own, in the arms of Jesus and Mary.

Day 9
LIGHT OF THE PATRIARCHS
In considering St. Joseph as the Light of the Patriarchs, our attention is called to two things. First, as the light, he is both the one toward whom they pointed and sheds light upon them so that we can see the Patriarchs more clearly. In Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we have seen examples of great virtue in particular ways. We may look to the faith of Abraham, the obedience of Isaac and the perseverance of Jacob. Even though, at the same time, we also see some serious faults as these imperfect men were still chosen to be part of the Salvation of God. St. Joseph, however, embodies each of these strengths, so it is through the Patriarchs that we can also come to know him better.
The second aspect of this title is a call to the Patriarchs, reminding us again of the long history of Salvation and the significance of these figures of the Old Testament in also leading us toward our God. We have the beautiful beginning of St. Matthew’s Gospel which gives us the genealogy of Jesus and traces the lineage throughout the generations and each step along the way. Often times we may look at that and even gloss over the names until we can get to the actual beginning of the story, but each of the names mentioned had a specific and particular role in this line. It can remind us of their virtue and our companionship with them. At the time they lived, they likely did not know what their place had been. Even if their place was simply to be a link in the chain, to be the father or mother of the next generation, that was necessary work and invaluable contribution to the birth of the Son of God in the flesh.
We are familiar, of course, with the three most significant of the Patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Abraham gives us that model of faith and righteousness, but also called forward the mercy of God as he pleaded for the cause of the innocents who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah. In Isaac, we have an image of the purity of heart and obedience. He was obedient to his father in carrying the wood that was to be used for his own sacrifice, and even to his mother, he was obedient in the actions that transferred the inheritance of Ishmael to him. And in Jacob we see the work of perseverance and reconciliation. He labored for 14 years to Laban before Rachel was given to him in marriage. Upon his return home, scripture tells us of the trepidation that filled his heart in meeting his brother Esau, but also the humility that brought reconciliation to these brothers. As the Light of the Patriarchs, St. Joseph calls us and points us to look into their lives and see what is most meaningful and significant in them, which is the work and role that they played in bringing forward the salvation of the nations.

THE SECOND SORROW OF ST. JOSEPH: THE POVERTY OF JESUS’ BIRTH (Lk 2:7)
O most blessed Patriarch, glorious St. Joseph, who was chosen to be the foster father of the Word made flesh, thy sorrow at seeing the Child Jesus born in such poverty was suddenly changed into heavenly exultation when you did hear the angelic hymn and beheld the glories of that resplendent night.
By this sorrow and this joy, we implore thee to obtain for us the grace to pass over from life’s pathway to hear the angelic songs of praise, and to rejoice in the shining splendor of celestial glory.

After your example, may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may shae in the peace and joy of your holy death.

Day 10
ROD OF JESSE
As the tradition goes: When it came time to choose a spouse for Mary, a man of virtue and purity who would also protect her virginity, the eligible men were gathered and each presented a rod for consideration. Among the rods, one began to bloom with lilies. This was the rod presented by St. Joseph, and so he became the one chosen to become the bridegroom to Mary.
But this rod of St. Joseph also harkens back to the prophecy of Isaiah, who promised that one would come from the stump (or root) of Jesse and he would be the Messiah. We can see Joseph, a descendant of Jesse, as the Rod of Jesse. The Rod being a sign of strength and power, of the authority like that of a Father. The Rod is also what a pilgrim would use to help him on his journey, as Joseph also helps us on our pilgrimage and journey, and helps us, through prayer and example, to remain pure and chaste in our love.
In prayer, we also recall today the third Sorrow of St. Joseph, which is the circumcision of Jesus, the first time that the Precious Blood of the Savior was spilled. And so, we join with all fathers in the sorrow of seeing their child injured, especially those whose injuries are most severe.

Day 11
CHASTE GUARDIAN OF THE VIRGIN
One of the words that I don’t think we have used, up to this point, regarding St. Joseph is “Guardian.” We have spoken about him as the Protector of Mary, which is close, but not quite the same. To be a Guardian calls to mind a certain vigilance and attentiveness. One also guards something that is highly valuable.
St. Joseph certainly fulfilled his duty in this respect, Guarding the virginity and purity of the Virgin Mary, not only in reality, but also in name. That is, he continues to protect her identity as Virgin from those who would try to steal it from her.
We also note today his example of a Chaste Guardianship. To be chaste is to love without any self interest, fulfillment, or desire. This is not only a matter of celibacy, which is a matter of physical relationship, while being chaste describes all aspects of love: heart, soul and body. St. Joseph was the Guardian whose attention was entirely on the protection and preservation of those in his charge. There were no moments of concern over his safety, or his well being. And so he continues to be this Guardian for all who seek him and ask for this vigilant man to become their father as well.
Today we pray with the Fourth Sorrow of St. Joseph, the Prophecy of Simeon, when Joseph hears the harsh words of the suffering that is to befall those put into his charge. Pray for those who are fearful of the future and what may come, that they receive the comfort and consolation of our Guardian, and know that whatever sufferings may come, they can be as much a part of Divine salvation as the sufferings of Christ and our Blessed Mother.

Day 12
FOSTER FATHER OF THE SON OF GOD
We have already spoken frequently about St. Joseph’s place as the Foster Father of the Son of God. But most of the time, we talk about this from St. Joseph’s perspective; what it was like for him to accept this child as his own. Today is an invitation to think from a different perspective: How does Jesus see this man who accepted him as his own son?
There is little doubt that our Lord would see this man with eyes of a tremendous love and gratitude; with faith and confidence in his protection (not only for himself but for all placed into his care); with obedience; and with assurance that what he seeks, has been inspired by the Father, who entrusted the Son into Joseph’s care.
As the Foster Father, St. Joseph can also challenge us in our perception of things. In another consecration that I have read, the authors were critical of the title of Foster Father because they did not feel that it gave justice to the Fatherhood Joseph provided. The authors felt that it minimized his role and value, treating him as second rate and something less than a real father. This is all the more reason to name him Foster Father, not because it reduces his role and significance, but because he gives us the example and brings to light the goodness of what a foster father is.
Again, the Saints and especially this beloved Saint, shed light on the world. In reality, to call someone a foster father is not a diminutive. To be a foster father is to joyfully and fully accept the fatherhood of a child who is not born of your blood; to willfully place the life of another ahead of your own; an expression of love that is made out of total and complete freedom. St. Joseph did not take the child Jesus as something less than his son, he did not pursue a need to have children of his own, because Jesus was his own. To become a child by adoption does not leave one as a secondary citizen in the family, but describes only the means by which we enter into the family. How significant is this when we consider that as Jesus was the adopted son of Joseph, so we are the adopted sons and daughters of His Father in Heaven. To remember St. Joseph as the Foster Father of the Son of God reminds us of God’s love for each of us and of the true inheritance that awaits.
As part of our prayers today, we share with St. Joseph in his fifth Sorrow, the Flight into Egypt. Through him, and by joining him in this time of sorrow, we pray for all those who flee from persecution and are forced to runaway from their homes, maybe especially for the youth who have run away, or been taken from their homes for slavery. May they have the Blessed St. Joseph also as their protector, guide, and Foster Father to see them return home when it is safe, just as he returned with the Holy Family. Let us also pray and remember all those who were unable to flee and the lives of the innocents that have been lost.

THE FIFTH SORROW OF ST. JOSEPH: THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT (Mt 2:14)
O most watchful Guardian of the Incarnate Son of God, glorious St. Joseph, what toil was thine in supporting and waiting upon the Son of the most high God, especially in the flight into Egypt! Yet at the same time, how you did rejoice to have always near you God Himself, and to see the idols of the Egyptians fall prostrate to the ground before Him.
By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us the grace of keeping ourselves in safety from the infernal tyrant, especially by flight from dangerous occasions; may every idol of earthly affectionn fall from our hearts; may we be wholly employed in serving Jesus and Mary, and for them alone may we live and happily die.
Our Father . . . Hail Mary . . . Glory Be . . .
ACT OF CONSECRATION
O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to your honor and give myself to you, that you may always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a greater purity of heart and fervent love of the interior life. After your example, may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death.

Day 13
ZEALOUS DEFENDER OF CHRIST
Zelo Zelatus: I am Zealous with Zeal for the Lord recalls the words of the Prophet Elijah who stood in defense of the God of Israel in the face of false prophets and the worship of other gods. To be zealous is, in a way, to have a single vision for something that is so strong that there is nothing you will not do to reach that goal. When one is zealous, tiredness, fear, and sacrifice become obstacles to work around or confront. A zealous person does not turn back from his course.
At times, we can be critical of people for being over zealous and unwilling to compromise because it can lead them into folly or even blind them from negative consequences of their actions. The question though isn’t whether or not Zeal is virtuous, but what are you Zealous for.
As the Defender of Christ, St. Joseph defended him physically, in this life, and he also defends the Name of Jesus as the Son of God, through his virtue and prayers. He Defended the virginity of Mary, in his own chastity. And he defends the body of Christ, the Church, Our Diocese (particularly as the Diocese of Kansas City-ST. JOSEPH) and each member of the body.
Also today, we join in the Sixth Sorrow, the Return From Egypt. This is a sorrow born in faith, as he was surely fearful of Achelus, but he accepted the surety of the promise of the angel that it was safe to return. He placed his zealous faith that his son was born of the Holy Spirit, God would allow no harm to come to his family.

THE SIXTH SORROW OF ST. JOSEPH: THE RETURN FROM EGYPT (Mt 2:22)
O glorious St. Joseph, an angel on earth, you did marvel to see the King of Heaven obedient to thy commands, but thy consolation in bringing Jesus out of the land of Egypt was troubled by your fear of Achelaus; nevertheless, being assured by the Angel, you dwelled in gladness at Nazareth with Jesus and Mary.
By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that our hearts may be delivered from harmful fears, so that we may rejoice in peace of conscience and may live in safety with Jesus and Mary and may, like thee, die in their company.

ACT OF CONSECRATION
O my beloved St. Joseph, adopt me as thy child. Take charge of my salvation; watch over me day and night; preserve me from the occasions of sin; obtain for me purity of body. Through thy intercession with Jesus, grant me a spirit of sacrifice, humility, self-denial, burning love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and a sweet and tender love for Mary, my mother, Saint Joseph, be with my living, be with me dying, and obtain for me a favorable judgment from Jesus, my merciful savior.

Day 14
HEAD OF THE HOLY FAMILY
St. Joseph is the head of this family. Maybe we should allow that thought to settle for a moment: A family of Jesus, the Son of God and Mary, the Mother of God and Queen of the Universe—yet neither of these are the Head of the Holy Family. Rather, this humble carpenter from Nazareth, a land of simple repute and insignificance, is the ordained head. Do we think that Jesus or Mary ever questioned or wondered why they should be under the authority and care of someone so simple, who was just an ordinary man?
Most certainly, he was also worthy, in virtue and faith, of their faith, that as the head, he would protect, always look out for their interest (not his own), and provide for their needs. They followed him with obedience.
His virtue, also gives us the example of what it means to be the head, of a family, or of an organization. To be the head does not mean to be the authoritarian leader who is smarter and more skilled than every other. But it is to possess a profound love and bear the responsibility of care for those placed in our charge.
This title also reminds us that there truly is a Holy Family, that is, a family that is set apart for God for the purpose of salvation. The intention and purpose of the family, going back to the first family in the Garden of Eden, is to guide the world and its members closer to salvation. Through the family, we can experience the relationship that God desires for each of us. There are certainly broken and fallen families. It is okay to say that they are broken, because God desires our healing and has promised that any family, can again lead us into a life of holiness and salvation.

THE SEVENTH SORROW OF ST. JOSEPH: THE LOSS OF THE CHILD JESUS (Lk 2:45)
O glorious St. Joseph, pattern of all holiness, when you did lose, through no fault of thine own, the Child Jesus, though sought Him sorrowing for the space of three days, until with great joy you did find Him again in the Temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors.
By this sorrow and this joy, we supplicate thee, with our hearts upon our lips, to keep us from ever having the misfortune to lose Jesus through mortal sin; but if this supreme misfortune should befall us, grant that we may seek Him with unceasing sorrow until we find Him again, ready to show us His great mercy, especially at the hour of death; so that we may pass over to enjoy His presence in Heaven; and there, in company with thee, may we sing the praises of His Divine mercy forever.
Our Father . . . Hail Mary . . . Glory Be . . .
For me, everything rests in that–self abnegation like our Lord in his hidden life, making the world forget me by my silence and my practice of virtue.

Day 15
JOSEPH MOST JUST
Day 15 marks the beginning of several days under the virtuous titles of St. Joseph. These not only help us call to mind the significance of these virtues, but more importantly, seek the aid of St. Joseph.
Today, we enlist the aid of Joseph Most Just. To be just, means to act deliberately with diligence and purpose. It requires one to listen, consider facts and also look toward the effects of one’s actions. Justice does not come from rash or thoughtless actions and it requires a firm foundation. The foundation, of course, is to act in accordance with God’s law, which is ultimately to act for the salvation of others in loving as Christ loved us.
Most of the time, I believe that we think of acting justly more in accord with what another person does so that our reaction is one of justice. Remember that scripture describes St. Joseph as a just man when explaining his initial decision to leave Mary. But being Just is not only about condemnation of another. To be just first and foremost means that we act justly.
In justice, Joseph listened to the Angel Gabriel and was obedient to the Will of God. Acting justly keeps us from acting out of fear and judgment. It also demands mercy, kindness and self-sacrifice.
Our prayer for the day is an ancient prayer that the tradition claims comes from the 1st century. So it stands as long evidence of the Church’s devotion to St. Joseph, and unites us with their prayers throughout centuries. It was later sent by Pope Julius II to Emperor Charles in the 16th century.

AN ANCIENT PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH (from the 1st Century)
O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires.
O St. Joseph, assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through thy foster Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, so that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer thee my thanksgiving and homage.
St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for me.

**This prayer was found in the 50th year of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves shall never die a sudden death or be drowned, nor shall poison take effect on them—neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy or be burned by any fire or be overpowered in battle.
Say this prayer for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail. (Although unverified, this explanation frequently accompanies the prayer, testifying to its authenticity.)

Day 16
JOSEPH MOST CHASTE
The Church calls us, that every one of the baptized is called to a life of chastity, according to his or her station in life. This does not mean, as some may fear, that the Church is asking married couples to be celibate. Celibacy and Chastity, though linked together, are not the same thing and while not all are called to celibacy, and some take this vow, all are called to live chastely.
What then is chastity? It is not uncontrolled passion; it is not obsessive love; it does not seek possession of another; it is not abusive, oppressive nor does it use someone for its own gain; it is not self-seeking. But to be chaste is to love as God loves, without any self-interest. A chaste love is passionate in self-giving; it is zealous at times and is perduring; it is generous and looks to serve the needs of another; a chaste love is merciful and forgiving; it is pure in vision and prepared at any moment to make a self sacrifice. Christ not only loved chastely, but lived chastely in every moment. This is part of the meaning and understanding of Joseph Most Chaste: He did not simply love Mary in this way, but he himself was the embodiment of Chastity, or a man who loved strongly, powerfully and without any self-interest. We may often hear a parent profess their love for a child because of how much joy and fulfillment having a child gives them, but this is not a chaste love. God does not love us because we bring Him joy. He created us that we may experience life abundantly.
In today’s prayer, we ask St. Joseph to intercede for us that we may have a pure vision and chaste body. Here we see the fullness of the two. That purity refers to a purity of vision, looking toward heavenly things, rather than earthly or physical pleasures; this leads to a chaste body. Absent any self-satisfaction or interest, our actions in turn treat others most nobly and humbly in every respect.

Day 17
JOSEPH MOST PRUDENT
There is no question that St. Joseph acted with great prudence. He did not act rashly or without thought, but always with Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding. These three Gifts of the Holy Spirit collect together to guide this virtue of Prudence.
Each day, as we walk through this consecration, a particular scripture passage or story will come to mind. Most of the time, it is one of the stories, as few as there are, involving St. Joseph. This morning, however, in thinking about Prudence, something entirely different came to mind: The story of Jesus and the Disciples, when they were on the boat as it was getting tossed about in the storm.
We remember that Jesus was asleep as the disciples became terrified. They awoke their master in fear and panic, and he immediately chastised them. It’s as if he were saying: Stop and think for a moment. I’m on this boat too. Do you really think that my Father is going to let me die out here?
Prudence is a virtue against fear, and often times it is the primary virtue against fear. Certainly, Faith is also a measure of calming our fears. But in leaning on the Gifts of Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding, we short-circuit many of the reasons behind our fear and uncertainty. When we feel the anxiousness rising, like the storm waters, look to prudence. The knowledge that Jesus was the Son of God and understanding that God would not lead His Son into the middle of the Sea to die, would have given them pause to not fear for their lives.
Prudence is also the virtue that will lead us and help us navigate the waters of these very difficult and uncertain times. When we act with prudence, there becomes no need to fear because even if there remains a specter of danger, it will lead us to faith and help us also to see that the virtues themselves are the guides that tell us how to live in Faith.
In our prayer to St. Joseph today, we ask for the conversion of a particular person. Before beginning these prayers, I encourage you to take a moment and think of who your intention will be, as within the prayer you will speak their name, placing their care into the prayers and hands of St. Joseph.

PRAYER TO OBTAIN A CONVERSION
O Glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, who merited to be called “just” by the Holy Spirit, I urgently recommend to thee the soul of (Name), which Jesus redeemed at the price of His Precious Blood.
You know how deplorable is the state and how unhappy the life of those who have banished this loving Savior from their hearts, and how greatly they are exposed to the danger of losing Him eternally. Permit not, I beseech thee, that a soul so dear to me should continue any longer in its evil ways; preserve it from the danger that threatens it; touch the heart of this prodigal child and conduct him back to the bosom of the fondest of fathers. Abandon him not, I implore thee, till thou has opened to him the gates of the heavenly city, where he will praise and bless thee throughout eternity for the happiness which he will owe to thy powerful intercession.

Day 18
JOSEPH MOST STRONG
Today, St. Joseph invites us to share in his virtue of Strength. More than a virtue, strength itself is one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, that gift of Fortitude. Through strength and Fortitude, St. Joseph is able to bear the weight and burden of others, but his strength is not only for carrying the sin of others. If we are attentive, we can see that strength is not very useful for the one who is strong, or for ourselves. To be strong does mean that one can defend one’s self and stand up in the midst of a strong wind without being blown over. However, it is primarily used for lifting things, completing a job, or for helping other people—all things that involve someone or something else. The gift of strength is given to one for the good of another.
Strength and Fortitude help support and give a foundation for other virtues. Through strength, one is able to be more patient, more compassionate, to act with a stronger faith, to pray more earnestly, even better able to resist temptations, and to endure in all other virtues.
The prayer for today is a Prayer of Confidence in St. Joseph, as we are encouraged to rest on the Strength of St. Joseph, not just the strength of his hands, but also his convictions and all of the other virtues that we may have confidence in.

PRAYER IN CONFIDENCE TO ST. JOSEPH (Ven. Martin von Cochem)
O Dear St. Joseph, faithful foster father of Jesus Christ, I devoutly come before thy sacred image and implore your aid and intercession in my present necessity. I know and firmly believe that to thee all things are possible with God, and that the sweet Infant Jesus, who on earth was subject to thee, His reputed father, can now in Heaven refuse thee no request. Thy faithful servant, the seraphic St. Teresa, experienced this and declared that never did she present to thee a petition that you did not grant; at the same time she invites all to have recourse to thee, assuring them that they will not depart from thee unconsoled.
Encouraged by this promise, I fly to thee, O holy Joseph, foster father of Jesus Christ and chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, beseeching thee by the tender love that you did bear to both, to bestow on me thy love and mercy. Comfort me in my present trial and affliction and obtain for me, through Jesus and Mary, that God the Father may grant me petition. Send up to the Heart of thy beloved Jesus but a single sigh, lovingly present to Him my request; then I shall certainly obtain it and be consoled in my distress.
To obtain this favorI shall say three Our Fathers and Hail Marys.

My Father and my Guardian, I give myself entirely to you, and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve. Wherefore, O good Father, since I am your own, keep me and guard me as your property and possession.

Day 19
JOSEPH MOST OBEDIENT
Being one of the three Evangelical Counsels, the vows taken by religious and foundation of Spiritual Virtue, obedience is often given short shrift. I think that one of the reasons for this is that it can appear to stand in direct contrast to many of our American values: Independence, Self-sufficiency, Self-determination, Standing up to authority, Fighting for your rights, Rebelling against authority, etc..
While there are some very good and worthy qualities within these characteristics, they also come from a misunderstanding of what obedience is and what it offers to us.
Obedience originates in the Latin meaning “To listen to.” It is not primarily about subjugation, submitting to authority, or allowing yourself to be exploited. There is a proper sense of obedience: To whom are we obedient? To whom are you listening?
In reality, we are always listening to someone and following someone’s lead. Even if we are independent and entirely self-reliant, we end up listening to ourself as the final authority and become obedient to our own thoughts, desires or impulses.
Virtuous obedience pulls us toward others. It calls us to listen to them, to express love and deference and ultimately, Obedience finds fulfillment in Divine Obedience to God. It leads us to meekness, loving the good of another over our own; humility, understanding our dependence and need for others; self-sacrifice; greater wisdom and knowledge. Divine Obedience is truly freeing in replacing our own yoke that we carry or the yoke of another person, with the Yoke of Christ which he has promised to all who love and follow him. To be obedient defers our faith for the wisdom, knowledge and capabilities of another. It is full of even more grace in times of injustice as the gift of obedience becomes a gift of self-sacrifice in love.
Our Prayer to St. Joseph today is a prayer to know one’s vocation. If you feel confident that you have already found and are living your Vocation, I encourage you to consider two things in this prayer. First, there is always a vocation within your Vocation (God is always more detailed in His call and plan for us). Second, offer this prayer for a specific individual who needs help in discovering their Vocation.

PRAYER TO KNOW ONE’S VOCATION
O Great St. Joseph, so docile to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, obtain for me the grace to know what state of life Divine Providence destines for me. Do not allow me to be deceived with regard to so important a choice, upon which depends my happiness in this world, and even my eternal salvation. Obtain for me that, being enlightened to know the Divine Will and being faithful in accomplishing it, I may embrace that state of life which God has destined for me and which will lead me to a happy eternity.

ACT OF CONSECRATION

Obtain for me a greater purity of heart and fervent love of the interior life. After your example, may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me, that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death.

Day 20
JOSEPH MOST FAITHFUL
I think that it is very easy to see St. Joseph’s Faithfulness: the strength of his faith in accepting the words of the Angel Gabrielle to accept Mary as his wife, trusting in God’s divine plan with such steadfastness to take his family and flee to a land that was hostile to Jews, and the courage to return home even when there was reason to remain afraid. These are aspects of Faithfulness that we often think about: To do what is right in the face of persecution, trust that God will provide, and have faith in His protection and Will.
But today, I would like to focus on one particular aspect of Faithfulness that we likely don’t see in St. Joseph, and it is the faith of the things that we do not see, and will not see in this life. St. Joseph was called to be the father, protector and provider to Mary and Jesus, and yet, he died and was not around to continue to provide these things for his family, or to witness in this life, the fruit of his work coming to bear.
It is one thing to have faith in following God’s commands, but he what happens when the command we are given is to leave? How many parents, or spouses grow fearful at passing from this life because of the ones who depend on them and need them?
St. Joseph is not only most Faithful, but is the patron of a Happy Death and was faithful, not only in what he did, but what he was called not to do. He was faithful to the work that he accomplished, confident that it would bear fruit; faithful to his son that when it came time for His ministry and revelation to the world, that He would accomplish His task without the presence of His father; and Faithful to the part of God’s plan that he did not see.
Lastly, I think it is good to share that when I made this Consecration for the first time, this day came on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Although I had not chosen today’s prayer, a prayer to St. Joseph for a Lively Faith, with any attention to the calendar date, it is quite fitting as the Collect for the Mass of this Feast day includes the petition: “grant that all who invoke the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe, may seek with ever more lively faith.” May those who seek St. Joseph as their spiritual guide and Father, also receive this same liveliness and exuberance in Faith.

PRAYER FOR A LIVELY FAITH
O happy, blissful St. Joseph, heir of the faith of all the Patriarchs, vouchsafe to obtain for me this beautiful and precious virtue. Increase in me a lively faith, the foundation of all sanctity, that faith without which no one can be pleasing to God.
Obtain for me that faith which triumphs over all temptations of the world and conquers human respect, which can be shaken by nothing, and which is directed solely toward God. Cause me, after your example, to live by faith, to subject my heart and understanding to God, that one day I may behold in Heaven what I now firmly believe on earth.

Day 21
EXAMPLE OF MEEKNESS
I don’t think that it is a stretch that many of us would not think of St. Joseph as meek; nor is meekness typically thought of as a very masculine trait. To be strong and powerful seems to be the opposite of being meek. But true meekness requires great strength and fortitude.
Meekness is a brother virtue to humility. It is the virtue that inspires one to put the needs and good of another before oneself. To be meek is to raise their needs, or even the stature of another above our own. It is an act done out of love that may bring a price that is joyfully paid. Who could contend that St. Joseph was not such a man, ever putting his wife Mary and the child Jesus, and their needs before his own. Meekness is the primary virtue of sacrifice.
Today’s prayer is a Prayer for Priests: May St. Joseph ever be their pillar and be always present to remind these servants of God of their shepherding call and always hold close to the treasure of meekness of heart.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
O Illustrious Patriarch St. Joseph, who carried the Infant Jesus in thy blessed arms and who, during the space of thirty years, lived in the most intimate familiarity with Him, take under thy powerful protection those whom He has clothed with His authority and honored with the dignity of His priesthood, whom He has charged to continue His mission, to preach His Gospel, and to dispense everywhere His graces and blessings. Sustain them in their fatigues and labors; console them in their pains; fortify them in their combats; but above all, keep far from them all the evils of sin.
Obtain for them the humility of St. John the Baptist, the faith of St. Peter, the zeal and charity of St. Paul, the purity of St. John and the spirit of prayer and recollection of which you, my dear Saint, are the model, so that, after having been on earth the faithful dispensers of the Mysteries of thy foster Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, they may in Heaven receive the recompense promised to pastors according to the Heart of God.

By that assistance which Jesus and Mary gave you at death, I beg of you to protect me in a special way at the hour of my death, so that dying assisted by you, iin the company of Jesus and Mary, I may go to thank you in paradise and, in your company, to praise my God for all eternity.

Day 22
MIRROR OF PATIENCE
St. Joseph not only understood, but accepted that all things will come in their time. Patience primarily relies on the virtues of faith, perseverance, knowledge and strength to help us remain unmoved by waiting and uncertainty. It is also one of the virtues that is greatly effected by pride because our impatience often comes from a belief that we either know best what should happen and when, or that we should be capable of making our will reality. But when we rest on the strength, promises and faith of the Lord; when we take His yoke upon our shoulders, then patience becomes much easier.
And here, opens the beauty of St. Joseph as the Mirror of Patience. If this seems like an odd title, take a moment to recall what a mirror does. A mirror is not the source of an image. Joseph is not the Fountain of Patience, or even Exemplar of Patience, but he is a Mirror. Patience is not something to be possessed like we may possess strength. Rather, it is a reflection of the Peace of Christ, much like the moon reflects the light of the sun. St. Joseph found his patience through Mary, as he waited for the birth of Jesus; He drew patience from the child Jesus because he knew and had faith in who His true Father was; and he drew patience from God in believing the words of the Angels and the promise of Salvation that he did not live to see.
May the Mirror of Patience also shine upon us in our moments of frustration, despair and doubt.

Day 23
LOVER OF POVERTY
Under the title of Lover of Poverty, it is the “Lover” that we should be attentive to. St. Joseph did not simply endure or accept poverty, but rather, he sought poverty, and more than embraced it, gives us this example of truly loving and seeking poverty. It is no coincidence that this is one of the evangelical counsels and vows made by Catholic religious.
The vow of poverty is more aptly understood and even referred in many Rules of Life as the renunciation of ownership. In this light, it is far easier to see that Holy Poverty is not centrally about a severe lack of necessities and owning poor quality things. Rather, it is about no longer taking ownership of the things in our care. Certainly St. Joseph, the Foster Father of the Son of God, knew about not claiming ownership of the Son who was placed into his care, or of the Blessed Virgin placed into his care. This too is one of the significant reasons for her perpetual virginity, that she was fully devoted to God as a spouse.
Renouncing ownership, true poverty, helps us to see that what we possess belongs to God and is to be used for His kingdom and the salvation of others. It does not mean that we no longer have anything, but that what we have has been placed under our care and for our use toward God’s design. My car, my computer, etc. are not mine for exclusive use, but mine for responsibility of care. It also becomes easier to remember to help someone with a ride or offer to jump start their car when I realize that I’m just the servant and it’s the Master’s car that should be used as He would use it.
Renunciation of ownership also does not only apply to physical things, but to spiritual things as well. Even my virtues, my faith, my knowledge, wisdom (if I have any), strength and perseverance are gifts of the Holy Spirit and remain gifts from God, they are not given to be used for building my own Pride or stature in life. St. Joseph reminds us to be Lovers of Poverty, to pursue and embrace it with great Joy.
Today we also remember particularly about the encouragement to make one noteworthy charitable act each week. To be noteworthy means that it is something of significance, is planned and intentional. It could be to call a relative that you haven’t spoken with for a long time; maybe there is a co-worker who needs transportation for the week; baking something to take to a neighbor; or a financial act of charitable giving. Although it is not an essential element to the Consecration, it will increase the fruit and graces you receive and strengthen your bond to St. Joseph significantly.

PRAYER OF CONFIDENCE IN ST.
To obtain this favor I shall say three Our Fathers and Hail Marys.

Day 24
MIRROR OF HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE
St. Joseph, Mirror of Humility and Obedience. When we think of the virtues it is often very good to think about them in pairs, helping one another and helping us grow and deepen our virtues. Up to this point in our Consecration, we’ve looked to St. Joseph under singular titles, and this is good, it highlights that he is the exemplar of Meekness, the most Just, and Spouse of God. This way of addressing Joseph draws us more intimately to the different sides and facets of this most blessed Saint’s Life. At the same time, it is good to be reminded that these titles don’t live in isolation and all of these traits, characteristics and identities are combined within this man. It also helps us to see the particular relationship between humbleness and obedience as they help one another in drawing us closer in perfection.
We have previously talked in depth about obedience, originating from the notion of listening to another, rather than being a description of power and authority. Humility is recognizing our insufficiency and need for the assistance of another. Understanding both aspects of humility is important, as recognizing our weaknesses and faults, or lack of perfection, isn’t simply a matter of degrading ourselves, but literally drives us to reach out to others and that action of love which recognizes the value and goodness in others—to depend on them means that they have something good to offer us. This is true for other people, as it is true for our relationship with God.
In working together, if we are struggling with either obedience or humility, the other can help us grow in the weaker virtue. If you struggle with obedience, often times it’s because we believe we know more than the other person. We can then humble ourselves and rely on their knowledge, expertise, wisdom, or experience to aid us in being obedient. Conversely, if you struggle with humility, then by acting obediently, you directly open yourself up to depending on another and this often helps us to see a new area of our weakness, or to realize the benefits that someone has to offer.
Lastly, in the prayer for today, I have chosen a selection that is a Plea of St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) to come to know St. Joseph personally and the strength of humbly beseeching him for any of our petitions. In this plea, St. Teresa affirms also that if at any time her request was amiss, that is, that she was not asking for the right thing, that St. Joseph did not fail to provide what was truly needed and worthwhile for asking—calling forth humility in recognizing that we don’t always know what we need, and obediently recognizing that what God provides through this beloved Saint is what is needed.

PLEA OF ST. TERESA OF JESUS (AVILA)
Would that I could persuade all men to be devoted to this glorious Saint, for I know by long experience what blessings he can obtain for us from God. I have never known anyone who was truly devoted to him and honored him by particular services who did not advance greatly in virtue: for he helps n a special way those souls who commend themselves to him. It is now very many years since I began asking him for something on his feast, and I have always received it. If the petition was in any way amiss, he rectified it for my greater good . . . I ask for the love of God that he who does not believe me will make the trial for himself –then he will find out by experience the great good that results from commending oneself to this glorious Patriarch and in being devoted to him.” (Autobiography, VI. 11-12)

Day 25
MODEL OF ARTISANS
Beyond where he lived and his ancestral land, there is not much that we know about St. Joseph from the Gospels. But the Gospel is sure to tell us that he was a Carpenter, meaning that this is somehow a very significant aspect about St. Joseph; Isn’t he the Carpenter’s son? Aren’t there many other ways that they could have framed this question, including mentioning Joseph by name? And yet, that Joseph was a carpenter is meaningful.
He was a man who worked with his hands, shaped and created things. Neither was he born of nobility nor considered an especially influential leader in the Jewish community.
As the Model of Artisans, we are drawn to the creative nature of being human. Human beings create. This is not always in an artistic way by contemporary standards, nor is it always in a material way, like carpentry. But being ourselves Created in the Image and Likeness of the Creator, it should not be a surprise that being creative is both a part of our nature and it is also through creation that we share in the work of God our Father. Creating things is a work of salvation and potentially draws us closer to God.
We may create by building things, by drawing, or painting, but also writing, in speaking, singing, even something as mundane as cooking is a creative act. Through this activity of creation we express a part of ourselves and and are once again, drawn into relationship with something other than ourself. Creating things becomes a work of love and every person has a way in which they are endowed with an ability to create.
As the Model of Artisans, St. Joseph calls us back to the significance of the things that we create, he also takes the place as a Patron for those who live through the work of their hands and reminds us that what we create, should be directed toward God and the service of others.
Today, we ask St. Joseph to Pray for Workmen, not only may our labors be directed toward our salvation, and the salvation of others, but may those who work hardest and under great physical toil receive the rest, comfort and strength to meet the needs of their families and all who depend on their labors.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH THE WORKMAN (POPE PIUS X)
O Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations, to work with gratitude and joy, in a spirit of penance for the remission of my sins, considering it an honor to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God, to work with order, peace, moderation and patience, without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties, to work above all with purity of intention and detachment from self, having always death before my eyes and the account that I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thine example, O Patriarch, St. Joseph. Such shall be my watchword in life and in death.

Day 26
GLORY OF HOME LIFE
Today, we mark the beginning of the final week of our Consecration to St. Joseph. In addition to remembering him as the Glory of Homelife, it seems appropriate to also offer a few notes about the final day of Consecration.
First, though, we recognize St. Joseph as the Glory of Homelife, how many of us would today think of a husband as being the Glory of Homelife? Being a homemaker is traditionally the role of a mother and may seem more appropriate to Mary—or at least this is what the last few generations have been told. Without going into a detailed history, it is worth briefly noting that until the later 19th Century the vast majority of people in the world and including Western civilization still worked at home. Husbands where taken away from their homes to work in an office or factory, but up until that time, men were as essential to Home Life as women. The husband, as the head of the family, would properly have been seen and a central role of his masculinity would have been the condition and care of the Home.
St. Joseph, the Glory of Home Life, reminds us that husbands and wives are equally homemakers. They do not have the same jobs, responsibilities or roles in caring for the Home and the family, but each remains equally essential.
The Glory, which as scripture tells us is found in the salvation of the home, needs the attention and work of the man of the house.
Our prayer for today is a Morning Offering to St. Joseph, which is one you may want to incorporate in your morning prayers after the conclusion of this consecration, as a way of starting each day in the presence of God and in commemoration of this Blessed Saint.

MORNING OFFERING TO ST. JOSEPH
Receive me, dear and chosen Father, and the offering of every movement of my body and soul, which I desire to present through thee to my blessed Lord.
Purify all! Make all a perfect holocaust! May every pulsation of my heart be a Spiritual Communion, every look and thought an act of love, every action a sweet sacrifice, every word an arrow of Divine love, every step an advance toward Jesus, every visit to Our Lord as pleasing to God as the errands of Angels, every thought of thee, dear Saint, an act to remind thee that I am your child.
I recommend to thee the occasions in which I usually fail, particularly (state the help you request). Accept each little devotion of the day, though replete with imperfection, and offer it to Jesus, whose mercy will overlook all, since He regards not so much the gift as the love of the giver.

Joseph, pray for me, that I may shae in the peace and joy of your holy death.

Day 27
GUARDIAN OF VIRGINS
In the earliest traditions of St. Joseph, many of the Church Fathers understood him to be an older man who was chosen especially, in part, to protect the virginity of Mary. In many schools of thought and according to the Protoevangelium of James, where we find the names of Mary’s parents, she was a temple virgin, one who had vowed a lifetime of virginity. This vow would also explain some of the strangeness of her response to the Angel Gabriel. Recall that the Angel said she would bear a child and that she asked how this was going to take place. Notice that both are in the future tense and even when he explained to her that the Holy Spirit would come over her, her pregnancy remained an event that would happen in the future. Had she intended to live with Joseph as typical husband and wife, a more normal question would have been to know when this was going to happen, or possibly why she was chosen. Her wonderment, however, suggests that she was expecting to remain a virgin. While not extremely common, virgins vowed to the Temple were not rare.
With many of the modern day attacks against the Virginity of the Mother of God (something that was universally accepted, even in the Protestant communities until the 19th century) St. Joseph continues to be the Guardian of not just the Mother of God, but of her Virginity. In particular, his chaste love and virtue also preserves for us her singular devotedness to God and the purity of love that exists between a husband and wife. Together, they remind us that physical relations are not the highest expression of love and that it is not essential to a healthy marriage.
From his selection as the husband to Mary, St. Joseph was seen as the Guardian of Virgins. This can be especially meaningful in our world today, as virginity itself, in this country and throughout the Western world, has been under severe attack and is considered by the secular world to be a bad thing. No longer does our broader culture see virginity as a virtue, nor something to be guarded and protected. To the contrary, the loss of virginity is seen as a passage into adulthood.
We ask our dear Saint, to continue to be the Guardian of Virgins, of those in religious and vowed life, and also Guardian of the virtue of virginity for all who have not yet married.

MEMORARE TO ST. JOSEPH
Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph my beloved patron, that never has it been heard that anyone invoked thy patronage and sought thine aid without being comforted. Day 28
PILLAR OF FAMILIES
In these final days of our Consecration to St. Joseph, we are giving our attention to the work that he continues to do for the Church and members of Christ’s body. This image of Joseph as the Pillar of Families is an easy one for us to imagine. We may be able to even picture our own family standing together on a platform that is raised on the shoulders of the Beloved Saint.
Every family needs a pillar in order to stand, a sure support to keep the walls and ceiling from caving in. Christ is the foundation, without question, and it is on this foundation that St. Joseph himself stands. It is also easy to see how the typical family, and even the value of family, has collapsed in the United States. We need the example of his strength, self-sacrifice, and all of his virtues. But even more, in him we can see the salvific work that the family accomplishes.
Family life is not a mere organizational structure, as modern psychology would have people believe. Through his betrothal to Mary, Joseph was raised from being a righteous man to a life of perfection. Through the love he had for his son, he also became the Foster Father of the Church. The family is one of the most profound of God’s chosen instruments for salvation, which is something that we first glimpsed with Adam and Eve. As the Pillar of Families, St. Joseph not only gives us the model and guide for a healthy family, but opens for us the gifts and significance of the family.
In this way, we can see the great significance of his work for our own families, and for the family in general. How many families in our nation are broken; split between parents, absent fathers or mothers, or even not yet fully formed as in the case of couples who wait, or never get married? Even the idea, hope and example of a nuclear family (father, mother and children), is under severe attack.
Let us pray today, through the hands of St. Joseph, for the state of the family in our nation, and especially for those who have lost hope in the virtuous family, for families broken by the death of a parent or divorce, those that suffer from the loss of a child and the many families that have not yet been formed in marriage.

THE VIRTUES OF ST. JOSEPH (ST. BRIDGET OF SWEDEN)
St. Joseph was so reserved and careful in his speech that not one word ever issued from his mouth that was not good and holy, nor did he ever indulge in unnecessary or less than charitable conversation. He was most patient and diligent in bearing fatigue; he practiced extreme poverty; he was most meek in bearing injuries; he was strong and constant against my enemies; he was the faithful witness of the wonders of Heaven, being dead to the flesh and the world, living only for God and for heavenly goods, which were the only things he desired. He was perfectly conformed to the Divine Will and so resigned to the dispositions of Heaven that he ever repeated: ‘May the Will of God ever be done in me!’ He rarely spoke with men, but continually with God, whose Will he desired to perform. Wherefore, he now enjoys great glory in Heaven.

For me, everything lied in that — self abnegation like our Lord in his hidden life, making the world forget me by my silence and my practice of virtue.

Day 29
SOLACE OF THE AFFLICTED
“To thee do we cry poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears.
Turn then Most Gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us.”
These words may come from one of the most ancient prayers of the tradition to our Blessed Mother, like so many other things that we offer to her, we can offer them also to her Holy Spouse, our Blessed St. Joseph. He too, is our Defender, Protector and Guardian. And he is also our Solace in affliction. We are reminded that there are times when we are asked to bear and endure through hardships, suffering and affliction. Indeed, the Psalms and Sacred Scripture throughout, give us God’s promise, not that there will be no hardship in this life, or that we would not walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, but that He would remain with the faithful. His Spirit would be upon us and we would have no cause to be afraid—even in the very midst of the storm and waves.
We may think of those afflicted by sickness or disease, poverty, despair and loneliness, oppression, hatred, hunger, or those afflicted by childhood abuse and other trauma. Our affliction may come as the result of our own sin or of the sins of others, that we may participate and aid in their redemption. But if it is our sin, then in his solace, St. Joseph will help us to see the cause so that we may turn toward our heavenly Father to seek healing and freedom.
To give solace is the character and work of St. Joseph that we give our attention to today. Perhaps we may conjure to mind a vision of the Beloved Disciple resting his head near the heart of Jesus on the night he was arrested. Affliction, as it did for the disciples, will come and in Joseph, we are promised solace, one to whom we can turn and flee toward and find that comforting peace that restores in us Faith in the Son of God, gives assurance of God’s continued Love and affords us the strength, in turn, to offer what we bear for the salvation and conversion of those we love.
Beloved St. Joseph; Holy and Blessed Spouse of the Mother of God; Most merciful, Most strong and compassionate Foster Father of the Son of God; To thee do we cry poor banished sons and daughters of Adam. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then Hope of the Sick and Solace of the Afflicted, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us your adopted son, Jesus.

Day 30
HOPE OF THE SICK
Who are the sick? According to the Gospels, Jesus heals those who come to him with all kind of afflictions and infirmities: the blind, the lame, the deaf and the mute. He casts out demons from those who are possessed, cleanses lepers, heals the woman who had suffered 12 years from a mysterious blood ailment, cured Simon Peter’s mother-in law, the centurion’s young daughter, and all kinds of sickness. We can imagine among the sick, those with fevers and coughs, with cancer in its many forms, HIV and in this time, it is easy to think of those who are especially isolated and prevented from human contact, many of whom never recover or find healing. St. Joseph is the Hope of the Sick.
In hope, we find fulfillment. This is what Hope truly is: the promised fulfillment of what God has willed, promised and brought to fruition, even if it lies in the future that we have not reached yet. Sometimes sickness results in recovery and healing. For others it is endured for a long time and sometimes it ends in death. St. Joseph helps us to see God’s fulfillment. He intercedes for those to be healed, comforts the afflicted, and is the Patron of a Good Death. Our hope is that we can see God’s Will and unite ours with His, as our Beloved Saint showed on so many occasions the docility of his will and conforming to the Hope of God’s salvation for His people.
We also should remember that sickness is not only physical. The Church Fathers universally write that the importance of Christ’s miracles, while giving powerful, visible manifestations of God’s love, were primarily about the proclamation of Divine mercy, forgiveness and setting people free from the spiritual ailments that kept them bound to sin. This is also why we understand that the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, like all of the Sacraments, is not received for its physical effects, but the spiritual reality of which God’s Grace pulls us into. True sickness, the sickness that truly matters, is an infirmity and ailment of the soul, which we call sin. It is both the cause and result of sin. And so, St Joseph, Hope of the Sick, by his examples of virtue and intercessions, is a help and guide to lead us toward health and restoration in the Lord.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH FOR A CHASTE LOVE
St. Joseph, father and guardian of the holy family, into whose faithful keeping were entrusted innocence itself, Christ Jesus, and Mary, Mother of God and Virgin of virgins;

Grant that my mind may be untainted, my body chaste, and that all of my senses be attuned to the needs and protection of the family our Lord has placed into my care;
Pray that my faith be always strong, that I may receive the gift of Wisdom to teach, fortitude to persevere in work;

Day 31
PATRON OF THE DYING
When I have asked people if they have prayed for the Grace of a Good Death, usually they will look at me for a moment and then respond, “I haven’t thought of that.”
While it is true that we have no control over our death, it is not a time without Grace and God’s gift to the soul. Among these graces can be to die free from a tragic death; to die at home; to have foreknowledge as one nears the moment of their death; or even to have some choice in the exact moment of our death (There are numerous stories of those who died minutes after a last family member arrived, married couples who die within hours of one another, or when at the exact moment that no one is in the room, someone may die peacefully).
Although many of us have forgotten it, there is such a thing as a Happy Death when the soul can depart from this life in true Peace, comfort and confidence in the Lord. Our tradition, from the beginning, tells us that no man had a happier death than St. Joseph, by the grace of his adopted Son. He (both St. Joseph and our Lord) knows of the difficulty in leaving loved ones behind and the questions of faith we may harbor that they will be taken care of. And so, in His kindness and compassion, he will intercede for those seeking a Good Death and our Lord will grant all that St. Joseph asks of him.

PRAYER FOR A HAPPY DEATH
O Glorious St. Joseph, behold I choose thee today for my special patron in life and at the hour of my death. Preserve and increase in me the spirit of prayer and fervor in the service of God. Remove far from me every kind of sin; obtain for me that my death may not come upon me unawares, but that I may have time to confess my sins sacramentally and to bewail them with a most perfect understanding and a most sincere and perfect contrition, in order that I may breathe forth my soul into the hands of Jesus and Mary.

ACT OF CONSECRATION (ST. BERNARDINE OF SIENA)
O my beloved St. Joseph, adopt me as thy child. Take charge of my salvation; watch over me day and night; preserve me from the occasions of sin; obtain for me purity of body.

Day 32
TERROR OF DEMONS

Demons are not only the vicious, terrifying creatures that possess and torment souls to act against their will. They are present, they exist, and from time-to-time come forward, although not in the way that Hollywood likes to portray, and these kinds of manifestations, what we typically call possessions, are the rarer form. A better way of thinking about demons and the role that they have in the world may be through the ancient icon of the Ladder of Divine Assent.
Based on a late 6th century book from John Climacus, the icon shows us the image of a ladder stretching from earth to Christ, who awaits the faithful in our heavenly kingdom. Monks and pilgrims, the baptized who walk the way of Christ line up and down the ladder, at various heights. Along the way, there are shadowy and dark figures, some riding the back of the pilgrims as they climb, others have bows to fire arrows, some with poles and loops to pull people off the ladder. These are the demons and spirits who try everything in their power to pull people away from the path of life. This is their goal and desire: to tempt, to tease, mislead and do whatever is in their limited power to tear a soul away from Christ, to prevent us from going to heaven, to inspire us to cause harm and even lead others away from salvation.
Demons come in many forms, but primarily, in attachments to sin and temptations that one seems particularly susceptible to. We may even think of the deadly sins, according to the spirits that tempt us toward acts of: Envy, Wrath, Avarice (Greed), Lust, Gluttony, Pride or Acedia (Sloth).
We pray to St. Michael the Archangel. St. Patrick has also given us a powerful prayer in the Shield (Prayer) of St. Patrick. There is a long tradition and wealth of prayers of protection and unbinding to help free us from the influence of these demons and spirits. But the true Terror of Demons is St. Joseph, the Father, Protector, Guardian and Defender of the Church. We can invoke his name in moments of temptation and fear. Particularly if there is a longstanding sin, or spirit, that you have struggled with, pray to this patron, that he may help through the example of virtue, his prayers for fortitude, wisdom and his strength. His very presence will put demons to flight.

MEMORARE TO ST. JOSEPH
Remember, O most pure Spouse of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph my beloved patron, that never has it been heard that anyone invoked thy patronage and sought thine aid without being comforted. Inspired by this confidence, I come to thee and fervently commend myself to thee. Despise not my petition, dear Foster Father of our Redeemer, but accept it graciously.

By that assistance which Jesus and Mary gave you at death, I beg of you to protect me in a special way at the hour of my death, so that dying assisted by you, iin the company of Jesus and Mary, I may go to thank you in paradise and, in your company, to praise my God for all eternity.

Day 33
PROTECTOR OF THE HOLY CHURCH
On this final day of our Consecration, I encourage you to focus on this act of gratitude and of faith. Give thanks to our Beloved Joseph, who rescued the child Jesus from the hands of a cruel master who sought to end God’s plan of salvation by the slaughter of innocents; and led the Son of God, who would be King of Heaven, and the Mother of the Church out of the land of Egypt, the land of exile. He was chosen from among all men throughout the history of the world to be given such a task, not only because he was capable, but even more, because of the endless love that God knew this man possessed. If the Blessed Mother of God was from the beginning, standing at the foot of the Cross, the Mother of the Church, then this Beloved Spouse and her Guardian and Protector, has been the Protector of the Holy Church, of all the adopted brothers and sisters of his Foster Son, baptized into Christ since that very beginning.
With gratitude for what he has done, we can also be bolstered in faith, that he continues to be the Protector. Our Lord promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against His church. St. Joseph has stood loyally at the gates of her defense and continues in our own days and times. Perhaps this is why, as the Dominican mystic prophesied, and so many of God’s Saints have testified, that in the final days when the Church will be under its greatest tribulation (which is not to say that these are those days), St. Joseph will play a bigger role and be called forward again to see her through the desert.
It is best to end, not with my words, but with a final reminder from the testimony of St. Teresa of Jesus:
“I took for my patron and lord the glorious St. Joseph, and recommended myself earnestly to him. I saw clearly that both out of this my present trouble, and out of others great importance, relating to my honor and the loss of my soul, this my father and lord delivered me, and rendered me greater services than I knew how to ask for. I cannot call to mind that I have ever asked him at any time for anything which he has not granted; and I am filled with amazement when I consider the great favors which God has given me through this blessed Saint; the dangers from which he has delivered me, both of body and of soul.”

PRAYER OF POPE LEO XIII
To you, O Blessed Joseph
do we come in our afflictions,
and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse,
we confidently invoke your patronage also.
Through that charity which bound you
to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God
and through the paternal love
with which you embraced the Child Jesus,
we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance
which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood,
and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.
O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family,
defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;
O most loving father, ward off from us
every contagion of error and corrupting influence;
O our most mighty protector, be kind to us
and from Heaven assist us in our struggle
with the power of darkness.
As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril,
so now protect God’s Holy Church
from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity;
shield too, each one of us by your constant protection,
so that, supported by your example and your aid,
we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness,
and to obtain eternal happiness in Heaven.

ACT OF CONSECRATION (Fr. Kendall Ketterlin)
